Kallum Watkins’ role revealed for second Leeds Rhinos debut

KALLUM WATKINS will start from the bench when he makes a second debut for Leeds Rhinos on Good Friday.

The 34-year-old has returned to Leeds, where he previously made more than 250 appearances between 2008 and 2019, from Salford Red Devils.

A centre for most of his first spell at Headingley, Watkins was transformed into a top back-rower during his time with Salford.

And Leeds coach Brad Arthur has hinted that Watkins could shift even further across and play in the middle.

While his utility value may prove useful from the bench, the plan is for Watkins to feature up front for the visit of Huddersfield Giants, with prop Mikolaj Oledzki suspended.

Arthur said: “I don’t want to put too much pressure on him early in the piece. He’ll start off the bench and we’ll put him on.

“I just want to see him get a feel for how we play and what we’re trying to drive.

“We’ll give him a couple of roles to play in that. He’ll play a bit through the middle for us and try to get some short interchange of passing going.

“Outside of that he’ll carry strong, he works hard in defence and he’ll ease his way into our systems.

“It’ll take a couple of weeks for him but on the back of how he’s trained I feel he’ll get in there smoothly and pretty quickly.”
