Paul Wood’s vision for Swinton Lions revival

SWINTON LIONS head coach Paul Wood is confident of a bright future for his club despite their relegation into the third tier of British Rugby League.

Wood, who is taking up his first head coaching position with the Lions, reflected on their often noteworthy but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to stay in the Championship last season.

“I wasn’t here then, but they had some big wins. Unfortunately when it counted they didn’t have consistency, which is why they were relegated.

“I’ve come in as a new coach to try and help rebuild the squad and take it through a transition.

“The directors have been brilliant and are still looking to bring Swinton their own ground while bringing in investment so I’m excited to be part of it.

“We are still at Heywood Road but there’s a vision within the next three years to move back nearer to Swinton.

“Being part of that transition is exciting because I was part of the Warrington team that moved from Wilderspool to the Halliwell Jones Stadium and it’s great to see clubs moving forward and investing in their future.

“When I took the job we had just nine players registered, so we’ve had to look around to see who’s available and we found a couple of lads who were in amateur rugby but have already played internationally for Ireland. They come highly recommended.”

Danny and Arron Lynch signed for the Lions last week from St Helens-based North West Premier League Haresfinch ARLFC.
