WIGAN WARRIORS head coach Matt has thrown his support behind an NRL takeover of Super League if it’s on “the right terms for British rugby league”.
Speculation about an NRL takeover has gathered even more pace following a report in the Sydney Morning Herald that the NRL was set to consider launching a deal for a 33% stake in Super League.
However, the proposal would come with a number of stipulations, including a ten-team Super League from across two countries and that the NRL would take sole administrative charge of the northern hemisphere game from 2028.
For Peet, he believes that such an idea should be ‘explored’ but that whatever conclusion the sport makes, it has to be in the best interests of the British game.
“It’s one to explore, the NRL have obviously done amazing things over there that hopefully we can tap into and learn from,” Peet said.
“But, it’s got to be on the right terms for British rugby league but we certainly need something.
“It’s probably not going to be the right thing for everybody but I would always be open to listening to ideas.
“Any decision made in sport won’t suit someone but if it’s the right thing to drive our sport forward in terms of on and off field success then I think we’ve got enough intelligent people in our game to listen and make a decision on what’s best.”
